Professional Writing Internship: KITE @ UHN
I completed a 6 week professional writing/communications placement with the KITE Research Institute @ UHN (The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute).
So began a journey of packed morning meetings, logistical challenges, freaking out, comradery and excellence in honing my craft!
The role involved me managing several of the of the Institute's Communications, Copywriting, UX Writing, Marketing and Advertising projects. It was… a lot of work! But it helped elevate my writing and helped me gain exposure to an incredible array of new domains within Professional Writing and Communications.

Their simulators are also very very cool…

“Welcome to KITE. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is…”
-My Supervisor totally what he said and not exaggerated in anyway :)
Internship Task 1:
Help Create a Website for Us
KITE’s primary focus prior to my arrival was to increase their engagement with users, donors and the media through their newest campaigns. As my supervisor Anthony once put it: “We are trying to be the Marvel comics of scientific communications”. To achieve this they wanted excellent webcopy, UX copy and website layouts to drive the point home across their projects. I then helped to create, wireframe and write UX copy/content for two new hospital campaign websites: FIBRE and KITEworks and helped consult for a third: Game Changers. KITE’s acronym stands for Knowledge, Talent, Innovation, Everywhere. They wanted the copy to always reflect this ethos of inclusivity and excellence.
So I got to work…

FIBRE
A campaign involving KITE’s on-going foray into smart-textiles and wearable technology that seeks to redefine preventative healthcare in Canada.
This project involved optimizing client engagement and overhauling the old FIBRE website. The direction of the site and the photography will eventually be adapted into an all-new brand aesthetic encompassing the future directions of the project. I was lucky enough to help create the groundwork for this transition!

KITEworks
A campaign in collaboration with Centennial College’s Communications & Professional Writing (CMPW) and Photography programs to create and promote KITE’s yearly Storyworks magazine. The magazine allows student writers and photographers an opportunity to hone their craft through humanizing and telling the stories of projects across the facility.
I managed the creation of and wrote content for this years version of the KITEworks magazine! Naturally, part of my internship was to promote it across KITE’s channels and turn its stories into running features that KITE plans on using for the rest of 2022. The magazine, stories, and overall promotion of the scientists featured were developed into a website and were promoted by myself and my team across KITE’s various channels.
I helped provide the public a window into how KITE works~
Game Changers
The Game Changers campaign was a comprehensive spotlight into the wonderful research that is being undertaken at KITE across a variety of relevant domains.
The magazine, stories, and overall promotion of the scientists featured in the Game Changers campaign were developed into a website and were promoted by myself and my team across KITE’s channels. I consulted with the team to help create the best possible visual layouts and copy for this release!
KITE changed the game and I helped them to do it~
KITE enjoyed my work with FIBRE so much…
That they allowed me to help curate a new type of Hackathon… where you wear the tech you create! :O
I had my keyboard all over this one:

Internship Task 2:
Tweet engaging content.
Managed the primary social media channel of an entire hospital and a few of it’s internal campaigns (Toronto Rehab Offical, FIBRE, CRANIA)…
My contributions can be seen between April 2022-May 2022 each account.
All social content I worked on is available in the Google Drive below.
And so I got to Tweeting…

One of them will likely get approved.
Be on the lookout if you are shopping at a Mark’s in late 2022…
Internship Task 4:
Create & edit (B2B) content to help promote our CEAL Labs.
KITE’s Challenging Environment Assessment Laboratory (CEAL) facility is comprised of several labs. The Institute seeks to offer the labs as spaces for scientists to rent as a means to further their rehabilitative research projects.
The question was posed: “Arjun, how can we re-imagine B2B content to optimize engagement with potential clients?”
The labs in question…
